PokerStars is one of the top online gambling operators in the world, offering players exciting options when it comes to casino and poker gameplay, as well as sports betting. The parent company of the brand, The Stars Group, recently signed a deal with Mount Airy Casino Resort of Pennsylvania to see the PokerStars brand move into the state, offering a full suite of iGaming content.
PokerStars has been in operation in the state of New Jersey for some time now but has yet to secure a deal in a new state, until this week. The brand will now be offering their online casino, poker, and sports betting products in Pennsylvania, as the state prepares to get started with their iGaming industry.
PokerStars New Alliance With Mount Airy
Mount Airy Vice President of Marketing and Gaming Operations, Vincent Jordan, commented on the new partnership by stating that The Stars Group was the obvious next step for the company to continue to diversify their casino offerings. According to Jordan:
“The online gaming content will provide opportunities for customers of the brand, particularly the younger audience, those who are ready to experience the next gaming challenge.”
Online gaming is set to start in early 2019 and land-based operators like Mount Airy are busy signing deals to get started. By working with PokerStars, the Mount Airy Casino is setting themselves up for success.
The PokerStars brand is well-known and recognized by gamblers and sure to be the first choice among Pennsylvanians and visitors to the state who wish to take part in the online gaming sites once the industry is up and running.
PokerStars Receives Approval [Updated December 2018]
During the November 28th meeting in Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Gambling Control Board officially signed off on the introduction of a PokerStars online gambling platform under the Mount Airy license. With talks of the partnership since the casino’s authorization to provide such services, and due to the PokerStars leading position in the existing New Jersey market, there is a positive outlook on this endeavor.
The Stars Group, as PokerStars’ parent company, has so far been careful in choosing its future markets. Their dominance in New Jersey online gambling has so far been weakened solely by the lack of territorial expansions, although their recent partnership with Eldorado Resorts is sure to change that. This land-based operator could open up to 11 additional US state markets, which would ultimately see The Stars Group as the industry leader.
Potential Competitors For Pennsylvania Online Poker
Mount Airy is not the only with a partnership up their sleeves, as other casinos have also prepared for the upcoming launch of the Pennsylvania interactive gambling industry. WSOP.com will most likely continue catering to Caesars properties, as is the case in New Jersey and Nevada, and will provide the poker platform for Harrah’s Philadelphia online poker room.
On the other hand, 888Poker has an established presence in Pennsylvania through a lengthy partnership with Mount Airy as mentioned and should be taken seriously on their future prospects. After a successful comeback to the US, PartyPoker has also announced a partnership with a third casino – Valley Forge, continuing the tendency that would see multiple providers contending in the Pennsylvania online gambling scene in 2019.

Mount Airy was one of nine Pennsylvania casinos to apply for an online gambling license in the last week. Should the license for the Mount Pocono casino be approved it would allow the casino to offer online poker and an online casino with table games and slots.
If and when Mount Airy’s online gambling license be accepted — which is expected — the casino will have pay a $10 license fee to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. By applying for a license before the July 16th deadline, Mount Airy was able to receive a reduced rate for a license that covers the three products. Pennsylvania casinos will still be eligible to apply for a PA online gambling licenses at an increased rate of $4 million per license or $12 million for all three.
Now that applications have been submitted, the PGCB will take 90 days to decide whether to approve applications. This potentially means that Mount Airy and other online casinos could be introduced in the Keystone state by the end of the year. How is that for exciting?
Mount Airy is among a group of Pennsylvania casinos and racinos that have established partnerships with online gambling providers over the last few years. In 2015, the casino partnered with 888, a top casino in both Europe and the regulated market in the United States.
Notably, 888 has a strong presence as a software provider for online poker rooms and casinos in New Jersey and Nevada. 888’s experience in the U.S. makes the European company an appealing partner in Pennsylvania. It is expected that 888 will continue its partnership with Mount Airy while establishing additional agreements with other PA casinos (Harrah’s Philadelphia also has an established partnership with 888).
This partnership could be particularly beneficial to Mount Airy’s online poker room when it goes live. Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey recently engaged in a shared liquidity agreement which essentially allows online poker rooms with similar software to combine player pools, resulting in more games and larger tournament prize pools.

Since 888-powered poker rooms are already the largest online poker room in regulated states by a factor of two, 888 — and by proxy Mount Airy — will be eager to offer games to Pennsylvania and its 13 million residents to the mix.
